Marking on IECEx Certificate of Conformity

23 Feb 2026
What do the “X” and “U” suffixes really mean on an IECEx Certificate of Conformity?

If you work with hazardous area equipment, you’ve probably seen certificate numbers like: IECEx ITS 23.0010𝐗

And maybe thought: “How big a deal is that little letter 𝐗?”

Short answer: a very big deal.

Here’s the simple explanation

🔹 Suffix “X”
Suffix "X" means the equipment is certified, but there are special conditions for safe use.

In simple terms:
You can install it in a hazardous area
⚠️ Only if you follow the specified conditions

These conditions may include (but aren’t limited to):
🔹Ambient temperature limits
🔹Use of specific cable glands or seals
🔹Restrictions on impact, friction, or electrostatic charging
🔹Particular installation or mounting requirements

Ignore the “X” conditions, and the Ex protection may no longer be valid.

🔹 Suffix “U”
Suffix "U means the item is not complete Ex equipment.
It’s an Ex component, intended to be:
🔹Built into other equipment
🔹Assessed again as part of a final certified assembly

Common examples include (but aren’t limited to):
🔹Empty enclosures
🔹Terminal blocks
🔹Cable glands
🔹Pushbuttons

U = cannot be installed on its own in a hazardous area.

Why this really matters

Misunderstanding X and U can lead to:
Non-compliant installations
Failed inspections or audits
Increased ignition risk

Ex compliance isn’t just about having a certificate it’s about using it correctly.

Quick recap:
X → Certified equipment with conditions
U → Component only, not standalone equipment
